Terrestrial and Airborne LiDAR Digital Documentation of Eroding National Register Sites in Everglades National Park
In 2005, Hurricane Wilma caused major damage to significant archeological resources in the Ten Thousand Islands. These sites, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are in a state of critical condition with active and ongoing severe deterioration and erosion with continual site loss. If the identified threats continue without appropriate corrective actions, these sites will undergo further degradation, and the site’s data potential for historical or scientific research will be lost. AIST performed detailed site locational mapping and topographic survey and used ground techniques such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and aerial LiDAR survey to capture as-is conditional information and positional details to assist in site assessment and monitoring, management, interpretation and research.

Aerial LiDAR in conjunction with RTK GPS ground-truthing enabled a complete digital elevation model of the Turner River site to be created in a GIS geodatabase platform. These maps will allow for better management and understanding of this important archaeological site.
Contour mapping derived from LiDAR and RTK GPS allows for a more complete understanding of the topographical complexity of the Turner River site.
Sandfly Key, with its unique shape and topographical distinctness, was accurately mapped as to its extent and configuration using aerial LiDAR and RTK GPS ground-truthing as part of this project. New portions of the site, not previously mapped, are able to be distinguished using these methods.
